Today's consultation was short and to the point. They have definitely diagnosed the cancer as rectal cancer. Dr. Su told us that all of her test came back squeeky clean and there is still no reason to not be looking at a cure.
Mom will have surgery first and then depending on the severity of the cancer possibly chemo. She will more than likely have a colostomy bag when surgery is over.
Dr. Sasha (sp) will be her surgeon. He will be calling Mom to set up her appointment. Hopefully we will know more about the surgery once she talks to this Dr.
The only thing Dr. Su would tell us about the surgery is that they need to get her in to surgery pretty quick. In surgery they will remove at least the tumor and surrounding lymph nodes. (This may vary depending on how bad the cancer is.) They will then do some testing on the tumor and lymph nodes and these tests will determine if she will need chemo and what type of chemo.
He said that she will more than likely need chemo but it won't start for 4-6 weeks after her surgery. Chemo is usually done in 12 stages with one treatment every 2 weeks. The treatments will take approximately 1/2 day, then the day after she will need to go back to the hospital for a quick check up.
If I have forgotten anything feel free to edit this.
Love ya.

she will have to go back 2 days after treatment to have a quick check up.
whimp
What are they checking 2 days later?
Am I to understand the surgery is to be done quickly? Dianne mentioned a date of the 23rd. That is not quick, is there a reason why they aren't doing it like Friday?
